My exposure to AI applications in a professional setting sparked a curiosity and motivation in me to dive in AI’s potential, also focused on the fashion and creative industries.
The challenge of my project was to teach my target audience (fashion students aged 15 to 25 years) how to apply AI step-by-step in their creative process. This was challenging because 80% of younger fashion students have little knowledge of AI and lack context about it. Also fashion students experience a lot of pressure during their design process, as they primarily work manually. I had to find a way to explain AI in a clear and accessible manner as possible.

The solution
My final solution is a workshop that introduces fashion students to AI. The workshop included key elements like: A tutorial video explaining AI basics and prompt creation, cheatsheets with step-by-step instructions for generating specific images, an augmented reality experience allowing students to visualize a generated jacket on a model and a after-talk where students could discuss their experiences with AI prompts.
By testing my solution, I refined my workshop solution through doing user interviews, usability tests and experiments with the Midjourney AI program to understand prompt effectiveness. By doing that, not could I could only create a workshop that is well structured for fashion students, but also make it more accessible for them to use in their design process.

My role
My role
I led my project by myself being the designer and researcher, also including stakeholders. By managing all phases from research to final presentation, I conducted both desk and field research to understand AI's role in fashion and identify students' needs, then used these insights to develop and test various prototypes. Through continuous feedback, I refined the concept, ultimately creating the workshop as solution.

The Expo
At the expo, I presented my workshop my AI-in-fashion project with posters, a tutorial video, and cheatsheets, guiding students through AI prompt creation. They generated designs and shared feedback, appreciating the accessible approach, AR experience, and practical tools. Andrea suggested as feedback to incorporate personal sketches feature. It enhances originality by allowing designers to input their own sketches, enabling the creation of unique designs and addressing data authenticity concerns.
Research:
Affinity Mapping
Through my desk research, I discovered the broad applicability of AI across various sectors, particularly its expanding role in enhancing efficiency and innovation within the fashion industry. Altrought I got much information, I used the Affinity Mapping method to cluster and categorize key insights. This process helped me identifying the user needs and focus areas, determining which aspects of AI are most relevant for my target audience: young fashion students.
Research:
Cultural Probe
After identifying their needs, my goal was to explore how fashion students experience the challenges they face in their design process. I used the Cultural Probe method to gain deeper insights into their experiences and needs. I focused on understanding their values, the pain points they encounter during designing, and their vision of an ideal scenario involving AI and design.
I conducted the Cultural Probe test at the AMFI Amsterdam Fashion Institute, interviewing four students and having them complete the booklets. I observed them during the process, answering any questions they had.
The results revealed that fashion students need more knowledge about AI and how to use AI prompts in their design workflow. These insights were crucial in shaping my final concept: the Prompt Workshop.
Ideation:
2 concepts
After receiving feedback from the prototype party and Pecha Kucha presentation, I developed two concepts. Both aim to enhance knowledge and skills related to AI in fashion. The first concept focuses on information sharing through an exhibition, while the second takes a more practical and interactive approach in the form of a workshop.
Because of high demand for a hands-on workshop format due to research and testing, I chose to make concept direction 2 my definitive concept. With that, students will sharpen their essential skills to use AI effectively.
Creation:
Prototype 1.0
I created a low-fidelity prototype to test if my AI workshop concept for the fashion industry resonated with the target audience. Based on Concept 2, the prototype included step-by-step paper tutorials on AI and prompts, sheets for participants to practice writing prompts, and AI-generated jacket sketches for them to describe. This process helped me evaluate their descriptive skills and improve the prompts.
The feedback from the first prototype party was generally positive, highlighting the potential of the concept 2 workshop. A student suggested expanding future applications of AI in fashion. The other students advised clarifying whether AI should serve as an inspiration tool or a complete concept. Overall, the feedback was encouraging, leading to the development of a second prototype and an AR exploration.
Creation:
Prototype 2.0
After taking the feedback and exploring AR technology, the mid-fidelity prototype was developed. It is more detailed and refined version than the low-fidelity version. The mid-fidelity prototype consists of two main components.
The instructional posters provides step-by-step guidance for writing clear and specific AI prompts, helping users formulate prompts effectively and encouraging a focused, structured approach. It can also be scanned with your phone to bring the posters alive. The second component, Prompt Cards act as practice tools, allowing students to draft prompts they can test with AI programs. Since the second prototype was a success based on the first feedback on my prototype, my focus was to test the AR experience.
Feedback from the students noted that the AR experience was enjoyable and added value to both the AR interaction and the generated fashion designs. This feedback lead to the final version of Fashion Prompts.
What did I learn?
Focusing on a clear target audience improved my project’s direction, and testing my workshop strengthened the concept through valuable feedback. I learned the importance of asking the right questions and saw the potential of speculative design for future exploration. Networking also highlighted the value of industry connections in creative tech. These lessons refined my approach and deepened my understanding of AI’s role in shaping fashion's future.

Ideation: 2 concepts
